Tanto o were e o was podem ser negativo, afirmativo, ou ainda, interrogativo.
a diferença é que o was é para i/he/she/it e o were é para   you/we/you/they. 
para o negativo, o que muda é a terminação, ficando : wasn't e weren't, que são contraídas do was not e were not.

exemplos:   we are in the park now, but yesterday we were at the school. 
we are in the park now, but yesterday we weren't at the school.

i am thin now, but when i was  child, i was really fat.
i am thin now. when i was child, i wasn't  fat.
